Crayons and wax-based pencils work well for matching colors on your pet drawing or printable coloring page. Keep your colors sharp so you can create fur folds and fine fur, as well as whiskers. This is difficult to do if there is more than one cat in the picture, such as a mother cat and kittens.

Choose a middle color to start your furry cat fur in a coloring book or one you’ve printed online. Use light pressure to paint in dark fur areas. Make your fur look realistic by using drawing movements that follow the bones or muscles of a real cat of the same breed. Look at pictures of real cats to learn what each breed’s fur looks like. Use light and dark colors of pencil or crayon to create highlights and lowlights. Trace the direction of the fur on a real cat, whether it’s a kitten or a full-grown fighting cat.
Once you’ve determined the fur pattern, add layers. Remember to shade like a real animal sitting in a light position in a photo or painting. You can purchase a cat breed book so you can refer to pictures of real cats of the same breed.

Change the length of your brush/pencil strokes to create short or long hair for different fur breeds. Follow the direction of the fur. This can be difficult to do in a tiger because of its spots.
Maybe you want to make the line drawing more interesting and you want to color the calico cat. Choose a female name for your cat because the calico color is only found in cats. Inside the drawing on the coloring page, draw several circles of different sizes in black and orange. Make some of them ovals and others circles. Cut out one or two of these shapes.

You can quickly create a visually interesting background by printing the printable coloring pages on colored paper. If you want to add interest and start with a solid color as your background, choose black construction paper or printer paper. When using colored paper

Regardless of the type of colored pencils or crayons you use, you will need to mix your colors. This means you smear the colors on top of each other using your finger or a small, clean, white piece of paper. You use white paper because you need to see how much color has come off the paper and you need to periodically change the pieces of paper you use to stain.

Cats have many layers of fur. Their outer coat, the guard coat, provides the longest coat, but does not show the cat’s color. Their skin actually shows color. The guard fur provides their longest fur. It protects the cat from cold weather and absorbs water, so the cat doesn’t get wet right away. Under this fur is their down fur that provides their insulation. Their breed determines how thick that fur is. When a cat is cold, this extra soft layer straightens up to allow the warm air underneath to pass through to its skin. If you’ve ever seen a tabby cat shedding during the summer, that was their fur underneath. Between these two layers, busy fur keeps and joins down. It is thinner than down fur, and longer, but thicker and shorter than guard fur. You have to paint or sketch in these different layers to make the cat’s fur look real. You can use different thicknesses of crayons or colored pencils. Whiskers are usually transparent or white. You can draw these using a white pencil on a colored background.
Although cats have long or short hair, most cats’ fur is straight. Curly fur is very rare. Long-haired breeds have fur that grows from 1.5 to five inches with a wide variety of patterns and colors. It offers you a wide selection of colors that you can use to color their pictures. Many cats fall into the short hair category. Their fur grows to about 1.5 inches and shows variation in color. A supposedly hairless cat actually has extremely short, velvety fur, essentially the human equivalent of a short cat. These cats usually have a solid coat color with little or no pattern. Their fur grows in eight colors. Hairless cats can come in black, brown, cinnamon, cream, fawn, brown, red and white. When drawing a picture of a cat like the Sphynx breed, remember that long strokes are not necessary to color the fur. There is hardly any fur to be seen. You can mix two or three shades of the same color, but not of different colors, as hairless calico cats are almost unheard of. Finally, if you are coloring a picture of a famous cartoon cat, remember to color it using the same color scheme as the original artist.
