The Padres compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) West Division. Founded in 1969, the club won two NL championships in 1984 and 1998, losing in the World Series both years. As of 2022, they have the 16th winningest season in franchise history.

The Padres are one of two major league baseball teams in California (the other being the Los Angeles Angels) to originate from the state; The Athletics originated in Philadelphia (and moved upstate from Kansas City), while the Dodgers and Giants originated in two New York boroughs—Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Padres are the only team from California that has not won a World Series.

After the Chargers moved to Los Angeles in 2017, the Padres became the only franchise in the four major American professional sports leagues in the San Diego sports market.

The Padres took their name from the Pacific Coast League team that arrived in San Diego in 1936. This minor league franchise won the PCL title in 1937, led by 18-year-old Ted Williams, a future Hall of Famer. Originally from San Diego. The team’s name, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese for “father”, refers to the Spanish Franciscan friars who founded San Diego in 1769.

In 1969, the Padres joined Major League Baseball as one of four new expansion teams, along with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals), the Kansas City Royals, and the Seattle Pilots (now the Milwaukee Brewers). Its first owner was C. Arnholt was Smith, a prominent San Diego businessman and former owner of the PCL Padres whose interests included banking, tuna fishing, hotels, real estate and airlines. Despite initial enthusiasm, the team struggled under the leadership of longtime baseball executives Eddie Leishman and Buzzy Bawas, as well as a new ballpark; The Padres finished last in the NL West in each of their first six seasons, losing 100 or more games four times. One of the team’s bright spots in the early years was first baseman and slugger Nate Colbert, an expansion draft pick of the Houston Astros and still the Padres’ career home run leader.

The team’s fortunes gradually improved as they won five National League West titles between 1984 and 1998 and reached the World Series twice, but lost both times. The main draw for the Padres in the 1980s and 1990s was Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, who won eight major league titles. They moved their home stadium to Petco Park in 2004.

From 1969 to 1993, the Padres held spring training at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. With a short driving distance and direct freeway route (170 miles (270 km), on Interstate 8), Yuma was very popular with Padres fans, and many fans drove from San Diego for spring training games. The move from Yuma to Peoria was highly controversial, but the team saw it as a reflection of the poor quality of the facilities in Yuma and the long travel required to play against other Arizona-based spring training teams (all of whose sites were in the Fox and Tucson areas, both far from Yuma).

Their first logo in 1969 featured a sun-like figure standing outside the San Diego Padres with a venerable Padres swinging a bat. The “Swinging Fryer” has been in and out of form ever since. Although the “Swinging Fryer” is no longer used as the primary logo, it is the team’s mascot and is now used as an alternate logo and uniform sleeve.

Brown and gold were the original colors of the Padres. The team’s first jersey featured a cream base for the home jersey and a tan base for the road jersey. Brown lettering with gold trim adorns the jersey, with the team name on the front of both designs. A second tan form, this time with the city’s name, was used as an alternative to the road before the first in 1971. The caps were all brown “SD” gold, though the team later offered a brown alternate gold cap. margin and the letter “SD”.

After switching from flannel to polyester in 1972, the Padres radically changed their uniforms. The team wore gold jerseys and pants regardless of road or home games, the only difference being the road jersey with the city’s name and the home jersey with the team’s name. The Padres also released a new brown cap with a gold front panel and a brown “SD” that would stick around for the next few years. The gold front panel was in the shape of a bell, a nod to the bells of the historic California expedition.
