Last month we were fortunate to have an opening ceremony in our home, where we celebrate the images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on our website. The home altar is in the newly named chapel area for prayer. We received beautiful paintings as gifts from the priest who performed the coronation for us. Although we have had a picture of the Sacred Heart in our home before, we have never had an actual enthronement or dedication of the Two Hearts. Before the inauguration of the throne, this priest gave a lecture in the Church of the Holy Name in which he discussed the importance of devotion to the Sacred Heart and the installation of images in the home. As Mary Rose succinctly put it in a recent letter to a pen pal,
“Father said this is especially necessary at this time because we live in a pagan society and for extra protection against demons.”
The Liturgical Construction Of The Altar
The priest advised us that preparation for coronation should be spiritual and temporal. The whole family should be together at the party. They must attend Mass and receive the Eucharist on the chosen day. Preparation should be done at home, preparing a home altar and, if possible, a chapel space for family and personal prayer.
We actually had an altar area in the house, where we had various statues displayed with crosses and where we prayed our rosaries every night. But it was not in an ideal location, and we wanted to try to set aside a place for prayer as Father recommended. And so we spent some time and energy preparing things; We knew that rearranging things and creating a new environment would have a big impact on the family and help signal the importance and scale of the opening. Although there was no separate room to convert into an actual chapel, we spent some time reconfiguring our furniture and finding combinations that allowed for a small area within our existing living space. The father said that there should be a place in the house so that there would be a suitable altar for the priest when he came to say mass.
Dad also suggested white linen for the altar, and so I made a quick trip to the drapery shop the evening before the feast and Josiah would love to have fresh white linen sewn for the altar, it’s fine.

Linens were made on the floor with a large overhang at the sides and front, similar to church altar linens. While these things are very clear, Baba said, we should do what we can and keep improving and make the Vedi as beautiful as we can in the future. I hope to finally find some nice lace trimmings.
The opening itself is very beautiful. The altar is furnished with linen and candles and the pictures await. The family gathers in other places with pictures, candles are also lit there. Father already blessed our pictures on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, but the priest will bless them at this time if you haven’t already. The family then goes from home to the altar together reciting the Apostles’ Creed, where the father leads the Sacred Heart, then the mother holds the Sacred Heart and then the children follow in order of age. It was very impressive! It is a great privilege to be invited to carry the image of Our Lady in front of my family.

He reminded us of some of the promises made by our Lord to St. Margaret Mary concerning those consecrated to His Sacred Heart, and after the talk a prayer was made for the consecration of the family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Concludes with the Sorrowful and Pure Heart of Mary, and a prayer of thanksgiving.
