Coloring Pages Audrey And Ted On A Bike – We co-hosted Blackout the Greenway Ride with Black Girls Do Bike last Sunday after being rescheduled twice due to heavy rains in Tennessee.
Blackout the Greenway is the first collaboration between Walk Bike Nashville and Black Girls Do Bike Nashville. Black Girls do Bike is a national organization focused on encouraging black women to ride bikes. Nashville has a tribute to She-ro Tina Fox.

The drive is the brainchild of her WBN Board Member, Andrea Barbour, and her Coordinator of WBN Community Engagements, Brenda Perez. Andrea and I met her February and had a strong desire to create spaces and opportunities for black people and people of color to ride bikes, get outside, and enjoy life. Luckily, a short time later, I met Tina Fox, who jumped on board. Shortly after, Ashleigh Wilson joined her Walk Bike Nashville staff.Ashleigh was our Bike Valet Coordinator prior to the pandemic.She joined WBN as an Education Coordinator and helped us to develop this ride. contributed to its success.
We decided to meet at Ted Rose Park because this section of the greenway is fairly flat as far as the Nashville hills and convenient. Ted Rhodes Park is located in historic Blacktown Nashville, just a few miles from Tina’s alma mater at Tennessee State University. Go Tigers! Andrea Barbour called this ride Blackout the Greenway. This is because we want to ride in solidarity with black women and chose black as the color to wear. It’s obvious who you’re with in all black. Originally, we planned the ride during Women’s History Month.
So we do our best and we are ready. We worked on transportation, prepared snacks, checked out bike walks, cycled through Nashville, and talked to TV stations interested in reporting.
Blackout The Greenway With Black Girls Do Bike Nashville
As the sun went down, people began to enter. At one point Andrea and I met face to face and by noon she saw 20+ riders. Under the mask, of course, there is a big smile. Mask required. Blacks, Latinos and Indigenous peoples have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, leaving no one at risk.
I was planning to run the green route all the time, but the wind was blowing at 15-20 km/h, so I changed it at the last minute.
I want to experience a fun and comfortable ride. At Ira Baxter’s suggestion, we drove to the midpoint of the greenway and back through a quiet, empty industrial park. Such a drive could not have been more successful. We met many women who dusted their bikes and decided to join, women who heard about it on a local TV station, women who showed up without anyone knowing, public school teachers, civil servants, Students, mothers., sisters and neighbors. The ride was a special invitation for black women, but others were invited too.Unite.

Ride your bike with friends, ride alone, hike in the park, or stroll the trails. You/we/I deserve these moments.
