Three scientists recently published details in the academic journal “Cretaceous Research” about a new plesiosaur specimen found in Late Cretaceous sediments from the central Spanish province of Guadalajara. Plesiosaur specimens from the Late Cretaceous of Europe are extremely rare and represent fragmentary fossils, including a tail bone, although it is unclear what autochthonous features (unique features) the fossil material might have constituted a new species. However, it is an important finding.

The fossil includes elements of the pelvic girdle and caudal vertebrae. They are the first evidence of a plesiosaur from the coastal marine deposits of Algora (Castilla-La-Mancha), Spain. This is one of those specimens reported from the Cretaceous of Spain.

A fossil can represent an individual; It is therefore the only plesiosaur specimen known from a few bones from central Spain. The researchers concluded that the material represented an uncertain member of the Elasmosauridae. Elasmosaurids are a group of plesiosaurs with a wide geographic range during the late Cretaceous period and the end of the Maastrichtian fauna.
The authors of the scientific paper include a researcher from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and two researchers based in Spain. They suggest that the fossils represent the remains of animals that died at sea and lived in a bay (thanatocoenosis) or nearshore environment.
